How Parents Can Prevent Their Child From Becoming Obese

The number of children who are obese in the US and other countries is growing each year at an alarming rate. Obese children are at risk of developing other more serious health conditions, which is why childhood obesity is something to be truly concerned about. Is your child overweight or obese? You can do a number of things to help your child. One way to fight obesity is to keep your child active and below you’ll find a few suggestions.

The type of drinks that your child consumes can have an effect on his or her health and weight. A lot of children today drink soda and other unhealthy beverages more than they do water. You will also see kids having one of those energy drinks loaded with sugar. Moreover, a lot of kids spend time at coffee shops and order high calorie drinks. You’ll also see a lot of children drinking fruit juices, which you as a parent might think are healthy but aren’t. You’re better off giving your child fresh fruit than canned or bottled juice because the latter is packed full of sugar and more often than not doesn’t contain real fruit. Children are better off drinking water than other kinds of beverages. However, there are healthy, low-calorie alternatives such as herbal teas. You can probably let your child drink soda still, but it should be an occasional drink and not a daily one. If you child is to get to a healthy weight, you need to encourage him or her to eat healthy, low-calorie snacks. Kids often get into the habit of snacking on candy, chips and other unhealthy foods. Your child can snack on things like nuts and fruits. Your child is probably going to resist at first and understandably so, as these alternatives aren’t as delicious as the sweet treats or salty chips, but you need to help your child develop a taste for healthier foods. When you’re packing your child’s lunch, don’t put in a chocolate bar for his or her snack. Try trail mix.
